ABSTRACT: The injection of a satellite into orbit is usually done
by a multi-stage launch vehicle. In order to obtain the best
performance it can offer, and therefore to make orbital maneuvers
less expensive, trajectory optimization techniques has been a
subject of intense research in recent decades. Nowadays the space
market demonstrates a strong tendency towards the improvement of
smaller satellites due to the miniaturization and increased
efficiency of embedded components. This work aims to make an
initial mapping of the possible orbits to be achieved by a
three-stage launch vehicle, taking into account only its movement
of translation in the three axes. It is included in the set of
equations of motion the gravitational potential up to the sixth
zonal harmonic (J\$_{6}\$), the presence of the atmospheric drag
and the effect of the Coriolis and centrifugal forces. Expressions
for calculating the thrust versor of each stage are obtained to
orientate the rocket into the desired flight plane. Considering
the long operating time of the satellites SCD-1 and SCD-2, a case
study is performed in order to evaluate the ability of the
Brazilian Microsatellite Launcher (VLM-1) to launch a small
substitute satellite from the Alc{\^a}ntara Launch Center (CLA)
in Brazil. Several simulations are performed by varying the
payload transported. In some cases, due to the limitations of
VLM-1, it is seen that the injection orbits end up to be elliptic
with low perigee and face orbital decay due to drag. In order to
solve this problem three flight configurations of the second stage
of the vehicle are analyzed. In addition, it is sought to
determine the duration of the ballistic flight phase of the
launcher which minimizes the fuel consumption used by the
satellite to perform one or two-pulse transfer maneuvers for the
correction of the semi-major axis and eccentricity.",
